Oracle and Sun - anything bad from aquisition?

Since April 20, 2009, when Oracle announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems (Sun), there was a lot of different stories and predictions.
One of the latest lists of frequently asked questions is published at oracle web site.
Recently, on one Oracle training, I had asked one of the Oracle guys (actually, this Polish engineer was one of the BEA engineers, which is also part of Oracle corporation), does he know how this acquisition could impact on java developers. He said, hardware is the key for Oracle, that would be the main focus by Oracle at the moment, but since BEA was largely involved in Java growth, and Sun is there mainly as license owner, we could expect only something better lately.

To be honest, I am little bit afraid that Oracle would make some versions of 'commercial' JVM and similar stuff. I hope it would not be so commercialized in a way that would limit the freedom for all, as its now, and that you wouldn't be able to make anything serious without buying commercial version of jdk:) I really hope, it would not be like this blogger says: marriage of heaven and hell:)

IntelliJ IDEA Goes Free and Open Source

In my blog history you can find a short story about IntelliJ IDEA, and my opinion about this cool product, but I could not believe that it would get so far. Few days ago, in my inbox settled one beautiful email with wonderful news:)

Roman Strobl, well known technology evangelist wrote to the java group about JetBrains announcement that IntelliJ IDEA goes to open source:)

DebConf11 bid for Banja Luka, Bosnia

Things are getting better and better in this preparations for bid.
The leader of the group which organizes this bosnian application for DebConf11 met with some important people in Banja Luka, and Bosnia&Herzegovina, and the best of all: he got their full support for such event.

It would be really great to have this conference in Bosnia, doesn't matter which city, just to have it here, as near as possible.

DebConf11 bid for Sarajevo, Bosnia

Yeah, a big break with a blog, but there is something urgent to announce, what is important for all linux users / fans in my country.
Bosnian Linux User Group bids for organization of DebConf 11. Currently, Bosnian and German teams are in the competition.
Even Germany has a lot of users, developers and Debian communities, I think Bosnia deserves a chance to show what have to offer for such events. I'm sure, that team which is involved in this is capable for organizing such conference.
Since every Java developer meets every day with linux, and since Debian is one of the best distribution, it would be a great pleasure to have something like debconf in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

A journey through The Medieval Bosnia

Just few pics how I spending some of the weekends in Bosnia, when its a nice weather ofcourse:) We are going all around old necropolis where you can find tombstones, which are here individually called 'stecak'. Usually you can find our necropolis on the mountains and hills, which makes your journey unforgettable.

Google App Engine - Java Support

It's a very nice feeling when you are an Java Developer and when you see that one of the most powerful companies in the world, as Google is, supports java language in its new technologies, tools and toys:)
Besides Android, Google mobile platform based on Java, now there is a reach opportunity for Java programmers in the service-based cloud computing, which Google introduces through his Google App Engine. Primary, Google App Engine was supported with API in Python and Java support for this engine is in developing stage.

In the short, Java programmers have opportunity to be more focused on the programming. Server hosting and such kind of the support can be left to Google professionals. Of course, in this stage I can see it more as something for personal projects, and testing, I'm not so sure this can be used in commercial purpose for now. But it's definitely good for public organizations and other companies and individuals which just want to have simple and quick java supported site.

One of my favorite java oriented technical site gives short article about what mostly concern, or should concern java software engineers, or any other programmer. How to go on with all these frameworks and technologies?

In the short, given advices we should or we could try to do.
- Subscribe to a technical mail post or RSS feed
- Don’t get stuck into too much reading
- Have timeouts with colleagues to discuss technical ideas
- Join a User Group (e.g. JUG)
- Establish a strong understanding of the common technologies
- Work on or start and open source project

Finally, I had been brave enough to get out on the SCJP 5 exam.
I had to admit, the test wasn't easy at all, even after 2 books I had read (from Kathy Sierra and Sanghera). I didn't spend enough time with online test, but I had 3 hours exam to analyze every task and to try to give correct answer.
Thanks to God, now I had something to be identified as Java Programmer, not just to say "...well I'm working as java programmer" :)

IntelliJ IDEA - buy it or leave it

Inspired by the coding style one of the software architects, I was wondering what is the catch in his beautiful code and his productivity, of course, besides his enormous knowledge in java technologies.
I find out that he use one of the java developing environment which is not so common in the life of the common java software engineers. You can guess, this developing environment is IntelliJ IDEA.
After downloading IntelliJ and checking options on the fly, first thing that I could notice is a lot of preposition for the code management, organizing members, methods, classes, instances, deployments..etc. I don't know, how would it be to switch between Eclipse IDE (environment which I'm using now) and IntelliJ environment, would it be good experience as it was with switching from NetBeans to Eclipse (i don't have nothing against NetBeans, but Eclipse was something what was easy to accept as new environment).
Whatever, we need always to take something new, to use it some time, and to valuate it. But, there is always some 'but', IntelliJ is not free environment, except if you have intention to make opensource software, or to use it in a classroom.
This price is probably a main reason, why this environment is not in a mass use among large number of java software engineers.
In any case, it is easy to notice that this is very useful environment, but from personal reasons, I don't have intention to purchase now, but I can recommend it, if you have some extra money:) if not, it is important that what ever you do, try to do it in a best way, and always search for a new ways to do it better and better.

Der Urlaub ist vorbei, zeit entflieht

Uhh.. what can I say! This summer was really amazing, you can see it by my empty post list in previous months! In between, I had been in 2 weeks abroad, as you can suppose, mostly in Germany. The moments of great impression I had experienced in Berlin and Paris. Two great cities which I always wanted to see, and thanks God, wish came a truth.

During this nice time, I didn't use any computers, but I can say, I really needed this kind of holiday. But not using computers, doesn't mean not thinking about it :))
I the shop at the Dortmund Bahnhof I noticed interesting title on the newspaper, actually it was magazine, and not just ordinary magazine, but Java magazine. Unfortunately, magazine is only on german language, which I cannot understand. I bought one, in a hope that I will find something, what I'm able to read and understand. What I'm really wondering is, why we don't have something similar, not just in the Bosnia, but in whole region of ex Yugoslavia?! We know that there is a representative number of java experts in this region, which could make something what we engineers could use as some interesting knowledge resource for java technologies.
I'm sure that this kind of magazine in adriatic region could help and be a passive guide to software engineers who are living in this region.

Merging - hard part of process

Hufff, you can guess which reason is that I'm writing this post. Team work is advantage in almost every project, but the dark side of this kind of work is merging from trunk to branch. This process is very simple if you was the only one who made changes over some classes, methods, but when you compare base and working version and you see that your changes are just small part of all changes, then its really ugly feeling, to pick and merge only your code. Even its last step in development process, it gives you a headache.
Tortoise and WinMerge tools are the life saviours for you and your code, easy to use and very compact.
If you use Linux than maybe Meld and KDESvn. could be useful.
What ever tool you use, merging is almost impossible to avoid. Good luck to all SW engineers, maybe there will be more inventive tools over the time, to make this process much more easier, because I believe it should be some other way of 'smart merging', there is a lot of space for it.

Huh, maybe some day...and day after..Adnan will sit in one of comfortable chair, or on stairway of JavaOne conference. There is a lot of very very interesting java thematics. Conference had been finished with 9th.may, and everyone returned to their homes and uploaded everything interesting related to this conference.

Bosnian Linux society

Finally, something interesting in this town, not made just for "special customers", like Telecom and Electro employees. We are IT society which doesn't have some kind of computer related 'scientific events'. When I find for some interesting event related to IT, it's 98% related to 'presenting solutions' to government, telecom, energy stuff, to gain profit. Next week, thanks God, here in Sarajevo, we will have interesting manifestation with symbolic name 'Linux for all 2008'. There is also similar event, which organizes every year, in town Zenica, called "Zenica Linux Seminar".
All this manifestations are needed not just for permanent linux user, they are by my opinion 'mandatory' for every IT professional, who cares about his profession. You don't need to deal with it, but as professional you need to be informed about "that world", and always compare what you, as professional can suggest for "regular users", and how can you improve your work, with best quality technologies in offer.

Finally the wanted phone in my hand

VPA COMPACT II in my hand...Thanks to my friend Osman, who study in Wien, I got the phone which I mentioned a long time ago:)
There is a more than a mega pixel camera, and WLan, two attributes which I preserve the most.
My sister can not understand how can I enjoy in large mobile phone, when everyone search for tiny and smaller phone. But thanks God, we are not the same. So it is a second hand mobile, but works perfectly. To be more precisely, its just like the mobile from "Die hard IV" when geek trying to abort gas collapse, while ninja girl trying to kill him:))

ALSA unpleasant noise

Sorry folks, but I would be glad if someone of you had this problem, maybe you can help me to get rid of audio nightmares on my ubuntu.
System sound, live streamings, mpeg3 outputs is followed by backing noise. I tried to recompile alsa, updates, modifying alsa mixers, and don't know what else, but still I have same problem. I see that problem is because of my integrated sound card, but drivers for motherboard didn't helped me.
I can live with it while I'm watching movie, and listening music silent, but headphones are out of game. Previously, I had same problem with Suse, but solved with alsa driver update and mixer setup. Neither one forum post with this problem didn't helped me, so I would keep on going....

NetBeans 7.0 in online edition, rewritten in javascript !

Could it be true?! I could never guess this kind of connection javascript with NetBeans IDE. As others developers, I cant wait to see it online, but to be honest, I'm wondering how they, and would they improve javascript to make something very useful as NetBeans is, because, as we know, javascript is nice, but not so much powerful 'programming language'.

Yeah, I'm trying to criticize myself, seams to me that I'm some kind of recorder in non updating my blog. I spent a some time on learning some scripting languages in last month. Really I didn't know how much effort you can do, combining Javascript & Ajax. In scripting languages the best is that, no matter are you .net, java or php programmer, you can always include scripting, and make your development much shorter and efficient. Of course, you need to control what you would pass through scripting, because they are highly vulnerable in comparing with programing languages. So, even I was working a lot with javascript before, try jquery.com and combine it with ajax, and save your time, which you can spend on more complex parts of the code.

Sorry, but I'm little bit nervous this night. Only reason is that I spent to many time on ebay.at bidding and searching for mobile phone. I posted before about my problem with mobile, and still I'm searching to buy something good for normal price, and I know thats almost mission impossible. Finally I founded a nice phone, with WLan, Camera, usb and nice performance, and in almost the last minute, someone gave much more money. So, again I must spend my precious time, for searching and bidding :((

In transition from one year to another, there is always huge number comparisons of technologies and prediction for new age. What to take serious?! Seems like most of us, who are 'in love' with some technologies, seeking for something which would confirm our interests and hopes.

Which web framework to use?

If you are programmer, probably you are programming web and "win" like application. It's simple to choose what you'll use in "win" like application development. Now we have also popular javaFX framework. But, which framework you'll use in web application development? There are, opposite to stand alone applications, a lot of frameworks for web development. Most popular are Ruby on Rails, Struts, JSF, Spring MVC, Stripes, Tapestry...etc. Which side you'll take up? Every programmer, besides personal interests, want to know "does taking this skill, I would have a job opportunities in next month, year? Is this 'experimental' technology, which wouldn't be useful very soon?". Many of these questions, you cannot know, and you need to define your project goals, and little bit explore on the web, which framework could satisfy your project needs. Define your goals, and analyze possibilities. If you don't have time, or nerves to do so, than start your NetBeans, open Web project and choose Java Server Faces framework.

One of the greatest java based conferences finished at Friday in Antwerp,Belgium. We can see how big event was by this cool numbers - more then 3200 participants from 42 countries. Belgium's JUG really have something to be proud on it. I can't wait for pdf presentations to be placed on the web, as they promised.

The first computer in my house - Commodore 610

Probably all of you are sentimental, when you talking about your first computer steps, and your first computer. Actually, my first computer steps were on Commodore 64, which has one of my best friend. But the first computer in my small room was computer on this picture, Commodore 610. It wasn't supported as 64, and in that time (1996) in Bosnia was very difficult to find any kind of software which you can run on this computer. But, surely, this computer and Commodore 64, helped to magnify my interests for IT, and those interests are still strong.

Managing your project in NetBeans

If you are software engineer, you probably have some experience in managing your projects. For those who aren't satisfied with way of managing or for those who never managed a project here is a short 'how-to' manage projects in NetBeans.
First, download NetBeans 6 and download SubVersion software.
Next, I found a very good subversion hosting, with nice support for collaboration between developers, http://www.codespaces.com/. You can create account there, or to find other subversion hosting. If you decide and register on codespaces, then next is to create subversion repository in admin section, place milestones, and set other parameters related for your projects. You can add users, assign tasks,set forum and much more useful stuff to improve your project management.
After one of added users logs, first he gets dashboard, a short project overview.
Each of users can easy upload their projects progress to repository. Simply open you java project in NetBeans, right click on project, choose Subversion->Import into Subversion Repository. If there is SVN error, check subversion software installation, set path to your installation and restart NetBeans. If there is no error, copy Repository link from Source code Tab in codespaces repository.
Insert your username and password and set folder name and import message.This message is ofter required on repositories, because of revisions reasons. If this is first time to upload project, then you can set "Project, version 1". Next what you'll be asked for is to select files to upload. I suggest to upload whole project.
Now, you are there - you can monitor your progres, and progress of others in the group, very easy update all changes of your code, and other useful things.

On Codespace, your development fellows and you have opportunity to monitor your code, browsing your project in Source code Tab

Ok, in the middle of my "free time" (I'm always struggling with the time :)) I created a potential logo for Java User Group of Bosnia and Herzegovina. You are right, there is no such group right now, but that isn't reason that I can't combine something interesting for me. In procedure is registering java.ba domain name, and maybe sometimes if group be gathered, I can give it to community, and join :)
Picture is combined from main form of java logo and of course, map of my country.
There is also large picture on my drive, but I suppose this is enough size for overview.

Java hosting support in B & H

Like in almost every country in the world, Bosnia and Herzegovina has a lot of hosting providers. Most of local hosting providers rent a servers in foreign countries, from America, England and Canada, and some of them have their servers, located in B&H.
Typical support, which you can rent from local hosting providers are mail,php,asp, MySQL and etc, but there is no Java support, no one have any java support.
I had been even called a main Bosnian telecom provider, which have own servers, and I got simple answer "we don't have interest in that, you are the first who call to ask for something like that, if we would have enough interested users, then we would consider about that". Ok, they are still in government property, we would see what would happen after private capital buys them. But, also I called private hosting providers, and most of them never thought about java support on servers.
Then, like most others java developers in Bosnia, I rent a web place on some server in Canada, which has java support. If you are bosnian hosting provider, and you considering about putting java support on your server, please contact me, you would make me happy. I don't have interests to be an hosting provider, and I need your java support guys, I really need it :)

Weird saturdays trip

It's more then a month, after last visit to my girlfriend. So finally I had weekend to visit her. Because of very bad weather conditions, and my back fall on ice in a front of working building (there is still some pain in backbone:( ) I decided to go in Mostar with a bus. As bus pass along stations, an older hairless man asked to sit next to me. First question was "you study IT, right?"...ok,maybe my eye glasses helped him. "I'm good friend with some of your professors and dean,you know",says, with some proud on his face. In the beginning, he seems to me like an interesting man, but story turned on his glorifying himself. Ok, I thought, I can handle that, I know how to listen, there is no need to interfere in his monologue. Than, after monologue, comes interesting part, I had been stricken with computer networks examination. After OSI model, TDM, VoIP, Ethernet... i tried to stop this silly situation. But, he is some hardheaded man, it took me a time to signalize him, that I'm not in high spirits to be examined so early in the morning by strange man. After I went from the bus, I was felt like a free man, and start to recover my mind from a weird bus drive. But, positive was that he gave me his business card, which can be a sign that I passed his test:)
Conclude can be: be always prepared, you can be stricken hard every time, in every place and maybe your professor will be informed that you don't know something what he learned you so many years :)))

How user solve programming problem

One day my colleague comes in the office, and says 'can you see difference between two a4 papers'. On the first sight I noticed shorter paper. As firefox and other browsers add header and footer on printing by default, users are used scissors to cut of header and footer :)) because apparently they didn't know how to turn it off.
So for those who are making web applications, if you didn't predict something like this, you should consider it next time.
They can always blame you, they are always telling a truth, and you should start from that point.

Google's $10 Million Mobile Challenge

In one of my previous posts, I mentioned gPhone in a context of new mobile generation. We don't need to be smart to guess what would happen in near future. Users would be in some kind of "mobile disease", because what Google touch, it becomes revolution.
They started with this million challenge for developing applications based on Android platform.
What is important, and why this news is on this blog is because you can write applications for gPhone in Java using the Android core libraries.
Hope that NetBeans community would support this adequately, for now, as I can see Eclipse took a larger piece of development environment.

UML in NB Release Candidate 1

After I downloaded and installed NB release candidate 1, first what did I try was UML modeling. Of course, if you want good plan and overview of your new project, UML diagram should be somewhere in beginning of development.
Managing UML templates can save you a lot of time, and a lot of nerves if you already used similar models in previous projects. NBRC1 offer you a easy moving over elements on diagram, easy making connection between them, inserting, customizing and assigning new to previous created elements.
It's really user friendly and useful tool for every java developer.

For those who prefer NetBeans in developing Java applications, these days we are expecting transition of our favorite developing environment, from Beta 6.0 in Release 6.0. Maybe some of you use Eclipse in development, but because of my very positive experience with java programming in NetBeans, I recommend it.

Heh, something in the way,uu,uu. My dear Curt, you should be alive, now, when Google have plan to distribute google phones. I can't wait to see which kind of attributes would be attached, but, we can suppose, Google would rock the planet once again.
Truly, I didn't have iPhone in my hand, but, after short online overview, and this new announcement from Google, Apple would loose a great part of cake, which they have a long time in customers eyes. They "smooth & anti-aliased" technology has always founded path "under skin" of people with taste.
Few days ago, my microphone on motorola suddenly died, and that is the main reason about my mobile phone interests. WLan is of course, numero uno requirement. So after review of my monthly budget, paying apartment rent, electricity, heat, water, maintaining of building, elevator tax, phone, internet, credit rate for car, very easy I saw that iPhone isn't in my range :) My good friend, who study in Wien, suggested me a some secondhand models, like Nokia n61. But, there is no camera. Can you imagine irony, that I have WLan without possibility to send a image from IT conference. So, I'm still searching...you will be first to know, when I buy this nice phone. Without better job, or two jobs in the same time, I can dream about new Google phone :)

Sarajevo - Signed the eSEE Agenda for the Development of Information Society

Oh my brothers please hurry up with that development of communication infrastructure. We are so limited, and the best is, that we are not aware, how much we are limited.
First example is my home connection. I'm using cable connection, paying about 20 euro every month for 5GB transfer (damn upload included). Believe or not, this is one of the cheap connections to rent. Next big nightmare here is connection speed, which is 256kbps.
Main internet provider offers better conditions in speed, for nearly same price, but you have 3GB transfer limit.
Of course, you can take flat rate with large speed, for much more money. Can young people of Bosnia and Herzegovina afford this, connection which is less then average connection, which use young man from europe?! Answer you already know.
So, I really hope, that this initiative of South Eastern Europe stability pact, would have a concrete results and benefits for people of this part of world.

Relax your body, your mind and your soul in Bosnia

This is not commercial for tourism in Bosnia&Herzegovina, but there is a lot of nice places for relaxing if you find some time.
Here are the pictures from my holiday on Boračko Lake. I was there with my friend Michael, he is working in one geometer office in Germany.

First, if you are on holiday in Bosnia, open your eyes wide around, because there are some mine fields over some places, and signs are often too small and somehow hidden.

Hiking over hills above one village. Interesting story is, when we met some people from the village working on the field, and asked them, does they have milk and cheese to sell us, one of them took a cellphone and call his mother, which told him, that there is no milk and cheese in the house :)

Bosnian reality - software engineers

If someone of you interests what looks like to be software engineer in Bosnia&Herzegovina, here is a story.
In the country like this, where is very hard to find any normal job, you may consider yourself lucky if you are software engineer. Yes, every day there is a plenty offers on bosnian jobs portal.
There is a lot of home born and foreign companies who offers you full time job, just few of them, gives you opportunity to work like freelancer or part time employee.
If you prefer freelance jobs, of course, you have getafreelancer.com and similar sites.
Most of SW companies are having official normal working time, but this type of job often requires a overtime work, for which in 90% cases you are not payed.
The biggest advice for engineers who are searching for new job is to CAREFULLY read you future work contract. This contract can define your life path in next years, and gives employer a chance to indirectly holds you in a place, no matter are you satisfied or not. SW houses work for almost every kind of institutions, from financial, government, big private industry, and if there is a part in a contract which doesn't give you a chance to work in institutions which where in some kind of relations with your company for a long time after you quit if you are not satisfied, you should reconsider your decision.
Payment is of course probably most important part of this story. If you don't have working experience in some other company (working like freelancer isn't counted), or if you have experience and you aren't graduated, your negotiations are not on your side, and often they would probably say to you "you aren't qualified engineer' and offer you about 300-400 euro, like first payment, 'and if you improve yourself, you would get more', which can take a long period, depends from company. There are of course exceptions, where you can get more than 600 euro for the first payment, but you must have good references and CV or something which would impress them.
Considering all this, and average payment in Bosnia, which is about 300 euro, good software engineers can make a good money (which doesn't include, working on projects after you get at home after work :)) ).

Freelancers and self employers I wish you good luck in charging for your projects.

Ok...finaly, after surfing over many blogs on blogspot, I decided to open my own.

My girlfriend asked me, "what would you write about?", so in the moment I'd brought decision to write something like autobiography, with periodic comments about common life.

So we would see, would it be something interesting :)
